CLOTHING FOR CATERING SCHOOL STUDENTS

Having to choose a career path at a young age often causes a lot of stress. However, no matter which path is taken, every student should prepare themselves as much as possible for their future duties. Whether they are future doctors or other medical staff, uniformed personnel or others who will be wearing specific clothing at work, they should get used to it as early as possible. It is no different with catering staff. For this reason, every catering school student should have a garment that, in their profession, demonstrates, above all, cleanliness. But is professional attire in catering schools so necessary during classes?

Is specialised attire necessary?

Why is specialist professional dress in the restaurant industry so important? A chef has always been recognisable from a distance - he or she wears a specific cap and apron. Today, chefs should be associated as much with professionalism as with cleanliness and elegance. Even though the kitchen can often be chaotic and it is easy to get dirty while cooking, every catering worker should still maintain a clean dress code. This is because it shows his or her professionalism and respect for the customer. A well-chosen, appropriate dress code is not only important from a hygiene point of view.

Standards in schools

A student who has worn professional clothing throughout his/her education knows how to take advantage of its benefits and work to keep clean and look neat. The issue of uniforms for catering school learners is also important for another reason. It no longer directly concerns the student himself, but affects the level of education in a particular establishment. Every school wants its graduates to represent it with dignity, and exemplary students should present themselves impeccably, preferably in the same clothes bearing the institution's logo. This increases its prestige and at the same time encourages more future masters of the restaurant industry to take an interest in the educational offer.

Schools usually organise appropriate uniforms for larger class groups, as well as for new students. Of course, depending on the possibilities of the establishment, these are paid for out of its funds, or the students have to contribute collectively for the ordered clothing. Exceptions to this are situations in which young people are forced to acquire the uniform themselves. However, under what circumstances should pupils wear the uniform? First and foremost during classes held directly in the kitchen area, as well as during apprenticeships and catering competitions, in which many schools from the region and even from all over Poland often compete against each other.

Types of clothing used in catering

The wardrobe of students of the culinary arts can be divided into those worn by kitchen staff and wait staff. Usually, their attire differs considerably, as do the scope of their duties. It is obvious that chefs should be more sheltered and protected from dirt. Therefore, students wishing to fulfil such a role in the future should wear professional kits. A distinction can be made between 2-, 3- and even 4-piece chef's kits, which usually include a kitel, trousers, a spare for extra protection and a cap. In addition, depending on the nature of the specific position, they may wear long aprons.

For waiters-to-be, on the other hand, smart shirts and trousers should be reserved, as well as protective hip-wraps of various lengths. However, regardless of their function in activity groups or at competitions, every student should remember to wear headgear. This is particularly important as it prevents hair from landing in the dishes being prepared. As we all know, such a 'surprise' in the dish can tarnish the reputation of even the best cuisine, which is why the wearing of headgear by future catering staff as so important. This is why, in addition to high caps, you can also opt for slightly more comfortable bandanas or fusillades.

The importance of wearing professional catering clothing can be seen on a daily basis. When you go to a restaurant with an open kitchen, for example, and you see the cooks and waiters in clean, aesthetically pleasing uniforms, you have a sense of trust in the employees of the establishment. Customers then feel safe and this encourages them to visit such a place again. This is why every student should instil the principles of the dress code in the catering space, as well as knowing how to use the features of the dress code to present themselves even better in front of customers, as well as the rest of the staff.
